LEARN THE BASICS

Blood Donor Basics

When you donate whole blood with the Winter Haven Hospital Community Blood Center, your blood stays here helping local patients.

Why should I donate blood?

When you donate blood, it is split into three products – red cells, plasma and platelets. This means your blood can be used to help three different patients in the local hospitals! The whole process takes an hour or less – and in the end, you walk away saving up to three lives.

When you donate platelets with WHHCBC, you may also be able to save multiple local lives with just one donation depending on your platelet count. The whole process usually takes about two hours. Platelets are specifically used to stop or prevent bleeding and are frequently needed by cancer patients, transplant patients, and cardiac patients.

Donor Stories

Mary & Dick

In 1972, Dick and Mary’s friend’s father needed blood. This prompted both Dick and Mary to start donating. At the time, they didn’t realize that blood donations were needed. After moving to Florida in 1985, they continued their life-saving blood donations at Winter Haven Hospital’s Community Blood Center. Both Dick and Mary praise the Community Blood Center’s “super caring” staff. Dick donates platelets, and Mary donated red blood cells until January of 2016, when she was diagnosed with NK/T-cell lymphoma. Due to her cancer diagnosis, Mary had to stop donating – but that didn’t stop her from visiting the staff
